Yes we can to justice and equality. Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair this world. Yes we can’. Barak Obama
“SINCE I WAS A YOUNG GIRL IT HAS BEEN MY DREAM TO TRAVEL TO AFRICA AS A NURSE AND LAST YEAR THIS BECAME A REALITY.”
I set out to Northern Uganda with another nurse and midwife from Church. We had no idea what we would be doing but God had a plan. Uganda is a beautiful country but for 26 years the North has been suppressed by war. The government developed ‘Camps’ for communities of people to live in, the the¬ory being safety in numbers for when the rebels at¬tack. Many of these people have been traumatised by war and death. They live in very basic conditions. In each Camp there is a health centre run by two or three nurses so as you could imagine, they are com¬pletely stretched in caring for the thousands of sick and pregnant women in their sub county. We spent our time visiting these health centres and providing the pregnant women with antenatal care. This gave us the opportunity to encouraging the nurses, pray for the sick and share the love of Jesus.
I met many incredible people and my heart broke just hearing their stories. There was one particular woman, Fiona, who is a leader at CCC Salt and Light, Kitgum. She married young and has given birth to seven children, three of them died as babies. She came to know Jesus through her second born son Sam, but in 2002 when Sam was travelling back from Uni in Kampala he was murdered by the rebels. On top of this her husband started having an affair with a woman who is HIV positive, as a result Fiona is now HIV positive. She is the most beautiful, faithful woman of God. This is just one person’s story, there are many more that will probably never be told.
I feel so privileged to have had the experience I did. It was eye-opening and at times extremely confronting but the people of Northern Uganda are beautiful. In hearing their stories I am so humbled by their strength and faithfulness. There are now nine C3 churches in Pader and Kitgum districts bringing healing and hope to many broken people.
